Crying Over Spilt Milk

Cheers to Spilt Milk, the second and final album from some of the best students of rock n’ roll ever to dawn vertical striped pants, Jellyfish.  Spilt Milk became of legal drinking age on February 13th  and I’m still crying over it.  I’m crying over Spilt Milk because it is insanely great and everyone should be drinking it up.

This is how I was introduced to Jellyfish many moons ago-

How was a band THIS good not up there with the likes of some of the early 90's most celebrated acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam?

Nirvana’s Nevermind came out the same year Jellyfish released its debut album, Bellybutton in '91.  Thanks to the power that was the great Nirvana, alternative-rock began to garner a lot of attention on the pop charts and deservingly so...  It was new and fresh, made the record labels a ton of money, and put flannel shirt makers back on the map.  Naturally, MTV and the suits began focusing their attention on selling the kids on this new thing called "grunge". Meanwhile, in the other corner, there was a band crafting beautiful Beach Boys harmonies, Beatlesque melodies, and Queen-like arena rock, all with a drummer who played standing up and singing lead at front/center stage.  Maybe it was just too close to what had come before.  The kids din't want Queen 2, they wanted something brand new to be a part of.  And they got it with Nirvana and more.  Both bands were inspired by The Beatles, but only one would come close to garnering that kind of attention.

The sad truth of the business of rock n roll is that not every great band “makes it” and hardly any of them ever “stay together for the kids”.  When founding members Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning hit the studio in ‘93 to make Spilt Milk, they had already slimmed down to a trio, and by the time Nirvana's front man passed, Jellyfish had already called it quits.

But they left us with two incredible albums that live on to this day.  Somebody buy this album a drink.  Happy Birthday, Spilt Milk.

“How does it feel to be the only one who knows that you’re right?”

P.S. It probably won’t surprise you that our very own Zach Swenson was the one to introduce me to this band back in the day.  Drummer’s…from another mother…
